Do you have a special teenager in your life? Do you work with teens? If so, I’m thrilled to announce the launch of my new book, The Mindful Teen: Powerful Skills to Help You Handle Stress One Moment at a Time.
I’m a pediatrician and adolescent medicine specialist, and I work with teens who experience chronic stress and stress-related health conditions. The Mindful Teen has been a creative mindfulness practice and a labor of love for me over the last two years, building on my work with Dr. Jake Locke at BC Children’s Hospital (although the book is not an official project of, or endorsed by, BCCH). Being a teen is stressful, with all kinds of stress from school, family, neighborhoods, peers, and sometimes chronic illness and chronic pain. The Mindful Teen speaks directly to teens, helping them to learn and practice mindfulness skills, plant the seeds for a more mindful life, and discover their own inner strength and resilience to cope and thrive in the face of stress. I hope that The Mindful Teen (and the associated website, mindfulnessforteens.com) might be useful for teens to guide themselves in mindfulness and coping, and also as a supplement to youth mindfulness programs in schools, community, and health care settings. I’ve been humbled by some advance reviews by my teachers and inspirations in mindfulness. Many of you have also inspired, taught, or supported me in this work, so for that I offer my deepest gratitude.
“A book that establishes a truly wise, empathic, and motivating resonance with teens. It offers a straightforward and commonsensical way to deal with stress of all kinds and afflictive emotions and thoughts by inviting them into awareness and discovering that with a little mindfulness and heartfulness, you are much much bigger than they are!”
—Jon Kabat-Zinn, author of Full Catastrophe Living and Wherever You Go, There You Are
“Dzung Vo, my student, is a very dedicated and wonderful adolescent pediatrician. He has written this book as a record of experiences working with adolescents. It is a recommended book on mindfulness for teens and a teaching tool for the Wake Up Movement. I highly recommend this book for teens and teen educators.”
—Thich Nhat Hanh, Zen Master, poet, scholar, activist, and author of Being Peace
