After taking the online 8 week course I had to have surgery. I had been in many weeks of pain, and found meditation through the course to be very helpful, so while they were preparing me for surgery, I listened to a 20min. lying down meditation on my kindle. They asked me if I wanted meds to go to sleep before I went into surgery, but I declined because I felt quite calm from my meditation. They were amazed because well over 90% take the drug, and my only comment was that I wished I could take my kindle into surgery to meditate. They let me, and I was given only the minimum amount of anesthesia, waking at times, and went home 30 min after the one and a half hour surgery, and oh by the way, I am 70 years old. thank you MBSR. It will always be a big part of my life

Have had the same experience with back surgery twice this year but without the kindle. Was amazed, before the surgery, when I would feel I couldn’t take another inch of pain, went to my breath and watch the pain decline Surgery was a breeze as was recovery as there was none of that “stuff” in my system. Such a gift! Oh, by the way, I’ll be eighty in March! Yay for us Oldies, setting a trend!

Thanks for the reply. My recovery is going great too. MBSR has also helped my memory and mental processing. I find I can process quicker and mire acurately. Have you noticed that?

some of the elder slow down…sure makes more ease in life!
