Teaching mindfulness to college students

If you are interested in teaching mindfulness to college students and other emerging adults, please check out http://korumindfulness.org/ to learn about Koru.

I work in the student counseling center at Duke where we developed Koru, a mindfulness training program designed specifically for the developmental stage that college students are in. Our randomized, controlled trial found large and medium effect sizes in mindfulness, self compassion, perceived stress and sleep after the participants completed the 4 week program.

The Center for Koru Mindfulness now has a teacher certification program for anyone who wants to teach mindfulness in higher education or other places emerging adults can be found.

This summer we will have a certification training at Harvard on June 3-5, and in Petaluma, CA, sponsored by the UCSD Center for Mindfulness, August 2-6.

This is really interesting. I have integrated aspects of mindfulness into my teaching of undergrad nursing students. I’ll visit your website and welcome more dialogue.

Andra

Hi Andra,

Koru is being taught in several nursing schools at present. If you would like to connect with a Koru teacher in a nursing school, just let me know and I will make an introduction.

UC Davis is my school. How is this different than MBSR?

Andra

Hey Andra,

It is very different from MBSR. In brief, it is short and focused to match the college students busy lives and rapid pace; along with mindfulness meditation, we teach specific skills for managing stress, anxiety, insomnia; it is very structured with required attendance at all 4 75 minute classes and homework of 10 minutes/day of practice. They complete a log each day; we use language, stories, metaphors that are appropriate to the developmental stage; we build community as it is taught in small groups of students.

We are actually having a teacher certification training out there in California, in Petaluma, August 2-6. I don’t think we have anyone from Davis yet, but would love to!
