Yoga Teacher Training

Hi to all the yogis, yoginis and yoga teachers. For those that have completed a Yoga Teacher Training (YTT), I have questions.

Where did you do it?

Where do you recommend doing it?

What style of yoga?

Do you suggest standard/extended programs or immersion/retreat programs?

Did you travel for your training? How far? What was it like?

How long had you been practicing before you went for your training?

Did you start teaching classes after completing the training? How soon after and for how long?

Anything else I should consider before I take the plunge?

Thanks for reading!

Hi Scott,

I would recommend Gary Kraftsow’s Viniyoga training or Kripalu’s training.

In my view, standard/extended programs are more effective developmental
learning processes.

I had a decade of practice before teacher training, but I don’t see that as
necessary for everyone.

I first trained to teach yoga over the course of about three years at
center local to my area, so I only travelled there by car. Since then, I
have travelled for continuing ed. trainings, and it can be fun.

I started teaching under the guidance of my main teacher at her center, and
continued to teach there for a number of years. I do think it can be
helpful to practice and teach under a mentor like that for some time,
though again, it’s not the same for everyone.

Wishing you well with this journey,
Eowyn

Thanks Eowyn! You’ve been killing it on these CFM Home responses. Much appreciated.

Hi Scott,

I completed a yoga teacher training at the White Lotus Foundation in Santa Barbara, California. I highly recommend this program. I am very happy with my choice to do a residential retreat program, especially since I was in college when I did it, so a standard program wouldn’t have worked for me since I was not always in the same location. I came away in awe of how much I was capable of learning about yoga and meditation in such a short amount of time. I am from the East Coast, so I travelled across the country for my training, and was happy I did so because I felt the center I went to gave me exactly what I wanted from a yoga teacher training program. I did start teaching classes for fun after the training although I do not anymore. I had practiced for two years before doing yoga teacher training. This was a very short time compared to the others training in my program, but I was also one of the youngest. Best of luck!
