Next step in training pathway - former UMass Intern

Hello,
I’d appreciate some help clarifying my next step in the certification process.

  • I have a longstanding meditation practice and have done numerous residential retreats.

  • In 1997 I attended the Stress Reduction Clinic Internship Program in Cycle 53, so basically I participated in an 8-week MBSR class as an intern. This was back in the day, the teacher training program has evolved, and I’m wondering if this satisfies a prerequisite for teacher training. [To be specific, the Internship consisted of 10 5-hour sessions and 1 8-hour session at UMass Medical. Breakdown: in-class Internship time was 58 hours, required home assignments were 60 hours, totaling 118 hours.]

-If the Internship does not satisfy the prerequisite, should my next step be Mindfulness Tools, the approved 5-day residential retreat, the online 8-week course?

I know this is detail-dense but would really appreciate your help, as my situation is unusual and retreat deadlines are very soon.

Thanks so much! I appreciate your help.

Barbara

It sounds like you would have a strong case for admission to the Practicum. That said, you may like to take the eight week again, to re-familiarize yourself with the material. Part of what that pre-requisite accomplishes is immediate familiarity with the content of the eight week course. If you took it in 1997, I would think the memory would be quite distant. I’d suggest you consider the online 8 week course before applying for the Practicum.

Thank you, Eowyn, I appreciate your response. I’m planning to be in a
local MBSR course starting early or mid-January.

And I see that a new Practicum begins in January. Given my situation, I’d
like to apply. If it’s logistically possible to begin the Practicum with
some overlap with the 8-week group, do you think it would be advisable to
do that?

And any idea when the next Practicum group might start, in case the January
Practicum is not an option for me?

A lot of questions, I know – I really appreciate your help.

Best,

Barbara

Hi, Barbara,

Eowyn is now away from this forum for a few days. I’ll step in to answer. As it stands right now, there are plans for there to be two Practicum groups happening beginning in April, one on Tuesday afternoon/evening and one on Wednesday morning/afternoon. These courses are now open for registration, with course information at the following link:

http://www.umassmed.edu/cfm/training/oasis-course-schedules/

and registration available here:

We request that folks finish their MBSR course before being active in the Practicum course.

All the best,
Margaret
